1. Project 4 Gallery: MICHELLE HINEBROOK
Project 4 and Pew Charitable Trusts are pleased to present paintings by Michelle Hinebrook at 901 E Street.

The work by this Brooklyn-based artist speaks to geometry, abstraction and surface. Geometry dictates suggestive references to skin, cellular structure and the digital.
Juxtaposing both organic and man-made structures informs a network of pattern derivative of minimalism yet abstract by virtue of placing the viewer up-close-and-personal with the subject.

The 13 artists whose work makes up “I Dream of Genomes” at the Islip Art Museum examine cloning and genetically altered food, animals, viruses and cells. But rather than just celebrating scientific advances in these areas, they employ a range of art styles and image-making techniques to confront us with the social, ethical and moral dilemmas raised by this sort of research.

The title is a play on the 1960s sitcom “I Dream of Jeannie,” about a woman who is a genie with magical powers to create and transform anything or anyone. Some scientists may feel they have similar powers these days, and maybe they are right, for who can forget the news media sensation surrounding Dolly the cloned sheep?

The question addressed here is: Just how safe and reliable is our ability to make clones? For Kate Clark, the future is uncertain; at least, that is one reading of her life-size, mixed-media sculpture of an antelope with a partly human face near the entrance to the main gallery here. A rather awkward and unhappy-looking beast, it is a reminder of how things can go wrong.

For some, the idea of cloning humans is equally worrisome. Jake Rowland imagines what this may be like, morphing photographic portraits of himself and his wife to create mutantlike figures. When one looks at the faces of the people in these photographs, their gender and age are difficult to determine. Mr. Rowland’s portraits depict a world in which identity has become fragmented and skewed.

Andrea Cote experiments with her own facial features using a variety of image creation and manipulation techniques. In a video, we see her face morphing and fluctuating in and out of focus as she explores the many possibilities of her facial structure.

But the real surprise of the exhibition is a work so bizarre in design that it alone probably compels a visit. That is a live feed via the Internet from a chicken coop at the Southampton home of the artist Hope Sandrow. Visitors are invited to ogle her baby birds, the progeny of a Paduan rooster that followed her home one morning. Soon after, the rooster found love.

None of this would be of any substance were it not for the fact that of the chicks that popped out of the eggs in Ms. Sandrow’s coop, one had the rooster’s coloring, two had the hens’ coloring, and the other three resembled neither the rooster nor the hens. It is all rather interesting.

Mathematical structures and equations inspire a broad group of artists, among them Steve Miller, Meridith Pingree and Julia Condon. Ms. Pingree is a standout with her sculptures made of tangled clothing zippers, which remind you of a double helix. They are installed in the main gallery, though not very well displayed, suspended above a mantelpiece over a fireplace. They really needed to be put on a plinth.

Several artists focus on the intricacies of genetic information, including the human cell structure and DNA sequencing. Michelle Hinebrook and Lisa Kellner both make paintings and drawings of magnified skin, tissue and hair follicles. Some visitors may find this repellent, but it is also fascinating to see that our bodies are made up of such a complex weave of microscopic cell structures.

Kathleen Kucka also paints human tissue at the microscopic level, though her colorful, mazelike paintings made of layers of acrylic paint drizzled over linen are magnified and distorted to a point of near-abstraction. They are slickly produced while at the same time retaining a handmade feel. To me they are among the most complicated and compelling works in the show.

They are also incredibly beautiful, and therefore a welcome inclusion in a show that is long on ideas and rather short on artistic flair. Ms. Kucka reminds us that serious, concept-based art can also be pleasurable to view.

Life On the Grid

The human body meets technology in a Brooklyn painter’s first solo show.

Brooklyn-based artist Michelle Hinebrook’s recent body of work gets into your head—both organically and mathematically. By that I mean it forces you to consider how viewing human biological imagery makes you feel while you contemplate the rigid nature of architecture and artificial structure.
How so? Michelle uses digital imaging and scanning technology as well as traditional painting techniques within her pieces. She effectively combines hard geometry with a soft palette of rubbery flesh and earth tones as well as hotter, almost blown glass feeling hues and textures. Her work brings to mind both the familial, if somewhat discomforting, workings of flesh, organs, blood and muscle, while simultaneously creating strange arachnid spawning grounds, bizarre microscopic landscapes and strange alien constructs. Each piece has an air of womb-like undulation and breath to it that gives the viewer a sense of comfortable, almost mesmeric immersion.

Gallerist Michael Foley gave Michelle her first New York solo show, “Enveloped,” because when he viewed her work, “I felt that I could physically slip in and between her layers of paint, often dozens of fine, misty layers,” he explains. “The paintings are a warm invitation to an interior world waiting to be explored.”

Check it out yourself before the show comes down January 5th!

Pontiac - The Museum of New Art’s (MONA) new show reveals more than meets the eye. Head to the museum’s Pontiac complex to see “The Next Big Thing”, featuring new work by young artists to watch, working in all disciplines.

Some standouts include Cynthia Randolph’s studies of time and timing depicted in a series of digital photographs. One chronicles one day of urine flushing down toilet bowls, resulting in a grid of colors and gradations in light that don’t look anything like what they are. Another work discovers the beauty of a surgical mask, light and disposable but able to protect from disease.

Roland Lusk has created a room installation that takes you into a verdant yet somewhat sickly forest. Leaves of green fabric are suspended from the ceiling and stuck on the walls along with painted white tree fungus and antlers. The walls are papered in an oversized digital print – a cowhide tinted grass-green.

Michelle Hinebrook creates highly textured and veiled paintings – some pure abstractions, others with hidden figures – on tiles covered with netting culled from produce bags found on fruits and vegetables.

Other artists’ include Kelly Rosebrock who has captured “fingerprints” of individual cell phones in her sparse, colorful photographs; Narine Kchikian, who curated the show, has created a minimalist room installation where illusions come into play; Georgia Vandewater, who creates paintings in vinyl that are variations on Da Vinci’s “Circle of Man”; the artist Unholy Erection has created a funhouse of gender coding in his installation of photos and video; and Gabriel Hillebrand whose work in the Annex on the first floor combines grids, string and books into a playful sculpture.

Mary Kim, a Cranbrook graduate and instructor at the College for Creative Studies, takes center stage at MONA with her colorful geometric towers, some of steel and some of wood. Simple yet complex, her painted pieces change as you move around the gallery, revealing hidden negative spaces and subtle shifts in color that are engaging.

MONA will hold a Searchlight Gala Reception for the artists, 7-10 p.m this Wednesday November 24th at the respective galleries and museum, including champagne, wine, three food stations and music by DJ Powder Blue. Shows are up through Dec 18.

The infinite is a concept which people have struggled to grasp and to communicate since the beginning of self-conscious thought. Mythology, religion, cosmology, philosophy, and science all provide conceptual models of infinity which visual artists have adapted to their needs over the ages. Pascal’s familiar quotation, “Nature is an infinite sphere of which the center is everywhere and the circumference nowhere,” suggests the difficulty of visually representing infinity. Artists have approached the problem in many ways over the centuries. In science the symbol for infinity is a horizontal figure eight, based on the Mobius strip, a two-dimensional ‘endless’ surface. In paintings and drawings spirals and circular compositions imply a never-ending spatial depth and movement. The multiplication of geometric patterns, with the implication of endless repetition, is another manner in which artists have chosen to depict the infinite. Other devices include the use of mirrors, dramatic scale shifts, or vast vistas, of both landscapes and imaginary representations of the cosmos. The exhibition will feature the work of the following artists: Bayard, Hilary Brace, Chris Duncan, Sara Eichner, Chris Gallagher, Michelle Hinebrook, Yayoi Kusama, Jean Lowe, Robert Mangold, David Mann, Antonio Murado, Ivàn Navarro, Aric Obrosey, Marilla Palmer, Scott Peterman, Barbara Takenaga, Sarah Walker, and Frank Yamrus.
